Fried Green Tomatoes with Zesty Roasted Red Pepper Sauce

Recently I’ve become obsessed with fried green tomatoes, thanks to my favorite local beer spot serving them up, all hot and yummy.  After several plates of these little guys, I knew I had to whip them up at home.

What the heck took me so long?!  Maybe it was that darn movie.  With all that abuse and time jumping!  Anywho,  I’m now super smitten with these little devils, and I think Ruth and Idgie would be proud.  These were easy, delicious and oh, so southern.

I can’t wait to turn these into an amped up BLT – some thick crusty sourdough, mayo, zesty sauce, thick maple bacon, crispy lettuce, and fried greens… NOM!

Feel free to omit or up the Sriracha in the buttermilk, and/or the dipping sauce. And play with the ratio of peppers and mayo on the sauce, depending on how thick you’d like it.  I prefer it drizzled over the tomatoes, only because dipping can get messy – but do your thing!

Fried Green Tomatoes

2 large firm green tomatoes, cut into 1/4-inch thick slices, ends removed

1 c vegetable or peanut oil

1/2 c buttermilk

1 t Sriracha

1/2 c all-purpose flour

1/3 c stone-ground cornmeal

pinch of Cayenne pepper

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, cayenne pepper, and a few cracks of salt and pepper.

Pour buttermilk into a separate bowl.  Add Sriracha, salt, and pepper, and combine.

Season tomatoes with salt and pepper.   Dip the tomatoes in the buttermilk, then dredge in cornmeal mixture, coating both sides well.

Place a large cast iron skillet over medium heat and coat with oil.

Pan-fry the tomatoes, in batches, until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes on each side.   *Don’t overcrowd the pan!

Carefully remove the tomatoes and drain on paper towels

Serve with zesty roasted red pepper sauce.

Zesty Roasted Red Pepper Sauce

1 c roasted red peppers

1/3 c mayonnaise

1-2 t Sriracha

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 t freshly squeezed lemon juice

zest of half a lemon

Place all ingredients into the bowl of food processor.  Pulse until smooth.  Refrigerate for at least an hour.  Serve cold.

  1. Naturally, i love fried green tomatoes, but pairing them with a roasted red pepper sauce sounds divine! Those look fried to perfection, btw. Have you tried fried green tomatoes with a pimento cheeseburger? So good! That’s been my fave way to serve them this summer. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe! I’ll be using that roasted red pepper sauce a lot.

  2. The red pepper sauce sounds delish! I must confess, I have never eaten fried green tomatoes (loved the movie), but I shall now put that on my (food) bucket list. 🙂
